Ages 13 and up. Celebrate Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month by making gorgeous Japanese marbled paper and learning about its history. Suminagashi means “ink floating.” Swirling patterns are created by dropping ink on the surface of water and then placing rice paper on top to lift the ink.
Suminagashi was traditionally used in the past by Shinto priests and Buddhist monks to commune with nature as a meditative practice. As the ink moves, the artist captures one moment of the design on paper. Suminagashi is a mindful practice that focuses on being present, embracing imperfections and finding beauty in impermanence.
