(A) Taíno Indigenous Resurgence Movement
Tuesday, November 28, 2023 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.
The Taíno are Indigenous Peoples of the Caribbean. Did you know that the Taíno people of the Bahamas were the first Native peoples to encounter Christopher Columbus in 1492?
There is a growing movement of Taíno peoples celebrating their Native heritage. This movement challenges the belief that Native peoples in the Caribbean became extinct.
Beike Bo Miguel Sobaoko Koromo Sague will offer a presentation that will give participants an insight into the history and development of the current Taíno Indigenous Resurgence Movement on the Caribbean Islands that originally served as the homeland of this ethnic group and also in the sites of the Taíno diaspora, in places such as New York City and Miami, FL.
Beike Bo Miguel Sobaoko Koromo Sague is the Founder and Leader of the Caney Indigenous Spiritual Circle. In 2004 he was named as official beike (ceremonial leader) of the Ciboney Tribe in South Florida. This tribal entity represents people of Cuban Arawak-Taíno affiliation, and other Caribbean Native peoples living in the South Florida region.
